Detection of foreign bodies in almond production

ABOUT THE PROJECT

In this project we apply Artificial Intelligence to images of nuts to detect foreign bodies. Foreign bodies are those elements that should not appear together with food on a production line because they reduce the quality of the product or because they can be dangerous for consumers.

In this use case, we simulated at laboratory level a real scenario in which almonds are produced and where metal pieces and other nuts like walnuts, cashews and hazelnuts must be detected as foreign bodies. As can be seen in the video, the system is capable of detecting foreign bodies, including those with colors very similar to the base of almonds, such as walnuts and hazelnuts. In this video the Logivision software is configured to give NOK when a metallic element is detected in the image.

This project has also been used to validate the smart camera developed by Logicmelt, which can be seen in the image below. Logicmelt has managed to optimize its software and integrate it all into a single device that simultaneously performs scene lighting and image capture and processing with AI, saving costs and facilitating installation compared to PC-based or multi-device systems. This milestone represents a big step for Logicmelt in its effort to simplify and optimize the use of AI with edge processing technology.
