Detection and classification of foreign bodies in nuts and dried fruit

In this project, we applied artificial intelligence to images of nuts to detect foreign bodies. These elements, which should not appear together with the food in a production line, reduce the quality of the product or can be dangerous for consumers.

In this case, the production of almonds is simulated at laboratory level, where foreign bodies such as metal parts and other nuts, specifically walnuts, cashew nuts and hazelnuts, are to be detected. As seen in the video, the system is able to detect foreign bodies, even those with colours very similar to almonds, such as walnuts and hazelnuts. In the video, the Logivision software to give as NOK when a metallic element is detected in the image.

Logicmelt smart camera validation

This project has also been used to validate the smart camera developed by Logicmelt, which can be seen in the image. Logicmelt has optimised its software and integrated everything into a single device that simultaneously performs scene illumination, capture and AI image processing. This saves costs and facilitates installation compared to PC-based systems or multiple devices. This milestone represents a breakthrough for Logicmelt in its effort to simplify and optimise the use of AI with Edge processing technology.
